My TJ did not come with the "subwoofer" in the center console, but I wanted more from my audio without taking up the little space I had. I reviewed other designs like the sub in the seat, or the microbox under the front seats. None of the other options really would work for what I was after.Three elements drove my decision. Foremost was stealth and as close to visually stock as possible. Let's face it, wranglers are known for their strongbox security with the cloth top. Second was how easy it would be for someone who has never glassed or done any box building on their own (few/little tools, time involved, no locals in my area into the same sort of audio). Last element was price.
Let's first work with pricing options. Now, if I had the tools to do so I could have built something similar myself for fairly cheap. Easily less than a quarter of the price. Instead, I was looking for something I could pick up, plug in, and be done. Instead the work involved to get the box to accept my speaker of choice took a lot more than I had initially planned. For one thing, the opening required work to remove about an eighth of an inch from around the hole. Then the trim ring around the speaker was just a smidge bit wider than the opening of the recessed mount. Cutting this recessed area down required building up the fiberglass from the inside of the box to keep at least one quarter inch wall. Another element I had lacking from my order is brackets. I don't know if it was supposed to come with these awkwardly aligned brackets or not, so I had a local shop build a set with proper alignment. I was glad to see there was no hole for the speaker wire though, this allowed me to find the best options as I'm running 10AWG wire from the amp.
Ease of application really fell flat on its face here. With all the work I did to the box after I received it, I felt as though I built it from scratch. Even then, there were still some minor problems after my handy work which required professional assistance to fix. My glassing skills are apparently bad, but it was my first project. Is this SSV Works box a drop in and go, definitely not. Be expected to do some work on the box to get what you want out of it.
Completely out of sight is what I was after, and that is what I got. It looks stock at first glance with the exception of the head unit, but when the stereo is bumping those 950W, you can definitely tell the difference with the top on or off.
Quality and workmanship should be mentioned as well. The end quality of the box is really fantastic. I would like to see some improvements made. The arm rest screws are generally long enough that they will interfere with the mounting, I changed mine out for three eighths inch bolts and shallow nuts I picked up from the hardware store. Another area I was upset about, lack of an MDF supporting ring behind the recessed mount. I know fiberglass is extremely strong, but I was hoping to use T-Nuts to anchor in the sub I had chose. The four bolt holes at the top of the box did not line up with the console cover. I opted to glass over the one hole which didn't line up correctly. Last little bit which could just tip the scale to perfect, inclusion of some polyfil would have put it over the top. The small details really sets things apart.
Overall I'm happy with the end results. After some fairly serious modifications needed to the box itself, the fabrication of proper mounting brackets to the frame, and the assistance of a professional shop to fix my heavy-handed glass workmanship... I'm out a little over $430 excluding the sub. The question of whether I would do this all over again or go another direction, it's really a toss-up. I found a box builder not terribly far from me who said he could have built a similar unit for less than what I ended up spending, after seeing the guys work, it probably would have been the better option. So in a nutshell, ask your local audio specialist to see what it's worth.
