I found myself in search of a new sound system for my Mac Pro after my Klipsch Promedia 4.1's subwoofer gave out after ten or so years of ownership. I was very disappointed in the limited options for a high end sound system for pc's these days. While the market is awash with 2.1 systems, there are few 5.1 systems to be found out there. I was equally disappointed to find that Klipsch no longer makes either the 4.1 or 5.1 systems... and their last Promedia 5.1's demonstrated unreliability of the subwoofer after three months or so in the majority of reviews that I had read. I spent about two weeks searching the web for a sound system to replace my much loved Promedia 4.1's, and even considered just trying to get the subwoofer repaired instead. I looked at the Logitech z5500's and the Bose Companion 5's and was just about to settle for the Logitech z5500 when through my searching I landed on reviews of the Edifier S550 at [...] and went on to look at them in more depth. It was difficult to find a poor review of these speakers. In head to head match up's, the Edifier's came out on top, capturing the highs and lows, better base, better all around price, and better quality construction. So, I took the plunge...
The speakers arrived today. It took some time to set up the system because of the connectors and the fact that Mac's don't have 5.1 sound cards, and this is not the easiest system to hook up to a receiver. I ended up buying two sets of Y-Cable's (2F-1M by Kicker) and some RCA Plug Couplers, along with a Stereo Mini to RCA "Y" cable 1.8m, to connect it to my computer. I do not know how much this affects the sound quality... I'm sure some audiophile will say it does, but I am not an audiophile, I just know what I like in terms of sound. I have a Bose sound system in my car, and an Onkyo theater system, and a Bose sound dock for my iPhone/iPod... and as I said I was replacing a Klipsch system I had for about ten years. So, I this is the range I'm playing in.
So, while I am not a audiophile pro. I have always had high end sound systems, and I just know what sounds good to me. I appreciate quality and don't mind to pay for such. These babies just reek of quality. The subwoofer is gigantic, and the shelf speakers feel quite solid as well. When I finally got the setup to work, quite a long, frustrating ordeal, I was blown away... The system is LOUD. The sound is enveloping and quite clear, rather than cacophonous and "in your face" or "tinny" ... I was totally amazed that even with the system cranked all the way up, with even the "boost" feature activated I could not discern any distortion. The clarity remained, the music enveloping me from all corners of the room rather than just in my face, so to speak. You can manage the sound of the front and back, and middle speakers separately, along with the subwoofer--and then all together based on those determined preferences... I appreciated this quality as it is easier to set up the system to ones personal sound preferences without having to only rely on actual placement of the speakers. You can make the back speakers louder, and the front softer, etc.
Even with the speakers turned low, the sound remains enveloping and sounds "loud," "heavy" and clear... equal to Bose in most respects, the clarity excelled my Klipsch speaker system which sometimes had a tendency to sound rather "tinny" and would distort if turned up too loud.
The customer service department was also quite helpful when I called them with questions about set up, even taking the time to email me with other suggestions on handling my issues of set up.
So, a layman's pro's and con's of this system as of day one (I will follow up as time passes if I can edit this entry) are:
Pro's:
* Sturdy construction. The subwoofer is quite heavy... and did I mention it is HUGE??? The speakers themselves are weighty and sturdy in both construction and appearance. Made of wood, not plastic.
* The sound is clear, heavy, and enveloping, regardless of volume.
* Turned all the way up, the sound is LOUD and THUMPING, and I could not discern any evidence of distortion. My much loved Klipsch's could not be turned all the way up without distortion occurring, and while the sound was clear, there simply is no comparison with this system... none! I have never heard anything like them... even my Bose system will begin to show weaknesses when turned all the way up. Loudness has never meant sound quality or clarity to me until I heard these speakers!
* Their tech support is quite helpful. When I called the customer support number, the call center was in Canada, however, the tech support person's accent was a little difficult to understand, but he was quite patient and helpful.
* You can, with some effort, set the system up to work with a Mac Pro (see above), make sure to purchase those items as while cords come with the system, it does not have the cable to connect to the computer (customer support offered to send me the 2.1 connector free of charge as it was not in the original packaging). With the same connectors mentioned above, the system could be run through a receiver if you have multiple speaker systems.
* The entire system looks quite nice and blends with the decor. Sleek black, made of wood, not plastic. The entire system bespeaks quality.
* The speaker wires that are included with the system are of more than sufficient length to place the speakers anywhere in a large room.
* The system came extremely well packaged.
* From what I've read so far, they only improve with age, and are quite reliable... I will update as time passes to confirm this.
* My Klipsch speaker system sometimes gave off interference, or a hiss. These speakers do not. They are quiet as a mouse until turned on with the music blaring from them. There is no background hiss or noise. Just amazing, clear, sound!
Con's:
* This is actually a 2.1 system if connected to your computer. This could be more clearly discussed so the buyer knows what they are getting (it can, as I have said, be set up as a 5.1 system though with the right cables). This is especially important as they are sold as computer speakers...
* They should be easier to connect to a receiver.
* While the system is quite sturdy, the netting on the front of the speakers and the lack of a protective grill on the subwoofer is a little disconcerting to me. I can just imagine accidentally putting my foot through the side of the subwoofer as I swivel in my chair and all kinds of particles from the air settling on the satellite speakers within their housings :( I have cats as well... with claws and falling hair... not to mention that I'm a smoker... so I'm a little concerned about how well they will hold up over time due to the lack of protective coverings). As I said, however, the system is made of wood, and shows sturdy workmanship with attention to detail. This is more a design issue.
* The length of the cord connecting the Wired Controller could be just a tad longer to allow for placement farther away from the subwoofer.
* The bass is a little heavy. I have the subwoofer turned down quite low, and the bass turned down lower as well, and it is still thumping... However, the overall sound remains, as I have said, undistorted and quite clear. The system could benefit from being able to turn the subwoofer down even lower than its current - 9 (the booklet says you can turn it down to - 13, but this is incorrect)
Overall, this is a quality system with outright AMAZING sound. I hope it lasts me for years to come. On a 10 point scale, I would give it an 8.8 (defaulting to Amazon's rating of 4 out of 5 stars) due to the lack of substantial protective coverings over the speakers on the subwoofer, and the netting on the satellite speakers, the complexity of set up and the overwhelming bass.
