Cambridge SoundWorks Subwoofer P205 Review
Please see my update below or this review will sound silly.First off, I'm surprised there are not more reviews of this powered sub, it's really a great subwoofer. Cambridge Soundworks makes great speakers. I've owned various combinations of their speakers over the past 17 years and have always been impressed with their performance. The only downside to some of their earlier products was the electronics build quality. I've been using the P205 for about 3 years and have not had any problems. Note that my older CS BassCube 12" failed twice with burnt up resistors. Also, the old sub had a common problem where the sub would hum and not know when to turn itself on and off. CS did a great job covering their warranty.
Thankfully those bugs have been worked out on the P205. Sound quality with this speaker has been superb when used in a 7.1 surround sound system. I use the speaker in an auto-detect mode that tries to be smart about when to power the speaker and when not to power the speaker. So far, it's done a great job of switching on and off. When watching movies with this speaker, it's perfect for a medium size room. We use in a 250sqft room and it does a great job. During movies, you really feel the base without distortion - the mark of a great powered sub. The speaker is a bit pricey but all good powered subs are relatively expensive. CS seems to run deals from time to time so if you want superior sound and are patient, you can probably get these reasonably.
Compared to other Subs I've owned:
* Cambridge Soundworks BassCube 12 - Great downward facing sub. Great power (perhaps too much for most applications). Electronics very buggy and required much service.
* Sony SA-W2500 - 70W was not enough to enjoy movies and true surround sound. Don't waste your money. Once you own a true powered sub, the SA-W2500 just falls flat.
Overall, this is a great sub and you will not be disappointed!
Update -
Sadly this sub has failed like the last three subs I've owned from Cambridge Soundworks. The EPA should go after these guys for what they must be doing to the landfills. My understanding is that this speaker is plagued with electronic issues - namely blown fuses that CSW is aware of but refuses to fix. Overall, I'm disappointed with CSW. It seems like they have the acoustics part down but don't really understand the electronics well. I could try to get it fixed under warranty but the shipping costs make this prohibitive and their customer service seems uninterested in helping ( the 5 year warranty is laughable). Their first tactic was to upsell me on another Sub... Sorry Cambridge, I won't be fooled a second time.
Those looking for a quality Sub, research Velodyne - I've heard many good things about these subwoofers (even the budget models). They seem to be built to last. I cannot trust CSW and regret giving this sub high marks.
