Gibson Burstbucker Pro (Neck) Pickup- Nickel

Gibson Gear IM59A-NH Electric Guitar Electronics Review

If you are questioning yourself on switching out pickups (pups) on a guitar, do note many things can change the tone of your pickups before replacing them. You can raise or lower them, or loosen/tighten them. If you are truly willing to give it a go with new pickups, Gibsson's burstbucker pro offer a nice seething sound. These are similar to traditional (classic) burstbuckers, demonstrations held at guitar shows signify there beloved sound comparing them to the original burstbuckers off say a Gibson Les Paul Gold Top. Negativity stems from there brighter sound when compared to the originals, but the pros make up for this by doing justice to the higher end.

They can be very thick, and sometimes even acoustic like if you play around with them a bit (versatile is a fitting term). They are ideal for rock and blues music, don't count jazz entirely out of the picture though. BB pros can be a little tricky, even when playing on a guitar you are well familiar with they have a little bit of a learning curve. I know that sounds really dumb, but they have a way of sneaking up on you in terms of appreciation. These aren't pickups that do the work for you, to get the definitive tones you have to apply yourself (just a bit).

These have a lot of attack and bite. They aren't the greatest for tapping (then again your guitars body/materials could be faulty for sustain), turning the tone a pinch down and adding some reverb or delay can be the saving grace. They are not noisy pups, at first I thought they were, come to find out my cable was a bit tweaked. Solos can sound very bluesy, or even metallic. Clean tones are decent, it can sound thin if your amp doesn't push enough lows.

Some will say these have no character, again these can be tricky to get use to. Gibson Les Paul Standards can have these as stock pups, along with the Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe (which is what I'm primarily testing them out with). My studio deluxe also includes the innovative coil taps. Coil taps split the pup so you can have a humbucker and single coil, simply by lifting the volume pot/knob. This was a cool way to see what the pro has to offer, this made things far too tinny sounding though and bumps it from what could be perceived as a Fender Strat sound to a Fender Tele.

Overall Pros are a bit pricey, really make sure you get to try them out before making such a purchase. You can read reviews all day, and even possibly watch demonstrations, playability is very subjective. I've learned to get the most out of them, but at times I find myself wandering back over to my other guitars for there Seymour Duncan's and milder Alnico classics. Not to say these are bad, but can be tiring.
