I really bought these speakers to be used as my Front Surround speakers. I already had bought a pair of KlipschSynergy F-30 Floor Tower speakers for the front speakers on my Surround Sound system.. Those are really good speakers!
I have a pretty fair ear for sound, and if I could have afforded the extra money perhaps I would have bought the more expensive versions of the Klipsch Speakers in general. But I am on a budget.
These speakers though, have some really good design aspects and they sound a lot better and "bigger" then they look.
They are not physically so small. They do take up a little space, about 15 inches across and maybe 10 inches from front to back. They are probably about 16 inches high. I have them sitting on two end tables.. And they fit with plenty of room. But they are not miniatures.
I bought these speakers for the fact that they have two woofers and two tweeters ( horns I guess ) in each one. They are curved along the front and the woofers and horns are placed in a semi circle.. I wasn't that interested in the finish on the speakers, but now that I have them I must say they do have very nice furniture finishes. Whether or not they are hand finished I would probably doubt, but they look much better then normal ( for these days ) MDF board with Polymer shell finishes that most company's are using.
They sound absolutely great. Klipsch speakers DO need to be played for at least 200 hours at some decent volume level to break in and start sounding extremely dynamic, with very clear bass and treble, and excellent medium range tone as well. They always sound extremely "Dull" when first hooked up and played.
They start out with an underwater type of muffled sound. But fear not!! I bought a second pair of these the moment that the first pair really started to loosen up and break in. I could not believe it was the same speaker after I reached the 200 hour point, give or take a few. :-) All I did was leave the system on a jazz station on my Apple TV and let it run when I was out during the day.
These speakers could be used as front speakers. They really do sound that good. They also have the capacity to handle some pretty heavy volume, though I never "blast" my sound system. I did that when I was a kid, many many moons ago.... Anyway, I am not an "audiophile" who can rewire crossovers or change out foam interiors. I am just someone who enjoys listening to a great system when watching movies ( these speakers along with the Front F-30's and a Klipsch Synergy C 20 Center speaker, sound pretty much just like the sound in movie theaters do, much to my neighbors chagrin... LoL ) and they are still excellent speakers for Mozart Violin Concertos, Red Garland Trio Jazz, and of course some general electronica "house" music. In fact they redefine the quality of that kind of music. I feel like I am in a club these speakers can really reproduce sound so well.
Having said all this, I would add that there are not many better speakers out there, especially in the same catatgory as these, and not at anywhere close to the price of these. I mean for front surround speakers these are absolutely unbeatable.
For actual Front speakers i haven't tried them against my other floor speakers, but i noticed that they do come in pretty close in sound to the F-30's and to a pair of Polk floor speakers I have in another room.
Though it isn't fair to compare tabletop speakers to floor speakers as far as sound depth and range goes, but with these you can, as I wrote above, in a rather good surround sound system, these could easily be used for Front Speakers as well as Front Surrounds and Rear Surrounds.
The Icon series I think has been discontinued, though I may be wrong, so these are a definite grab "them as soon as you can" type of very good deal. I had bought a pair of the Synergy C-10 Surround speakers, and they are so mediocre that I have replaced them with a second pair of these guys.
So I highly recommend these speakers. I prefer the darker finish. But the Cabernet is nice too. The sound is extraordinary. But remember, you gotta really break these speakers in slowly. They will completely loosen up given the 200 hour mark, and played at a decent but not very loud level during the break in period. They then simply change completely in tonal range and increased depth of sound, with the midrange brightening completely, and the bass and treble sounds also coming into a new and very pleasing dynamic of full range, bright, mellow, deep overall sound, etc. It is simply wonderful to start hearing the differences And this happens with all my Klipsch speakers.
Since both my parents were classically trained musicians and both my brother and myself inherited their talents for music, I know all about the time it takes for very good musical instruments to break in correctly.. My father was first string violinist for the Boston Pops and when he would bring home a new violin, it always took weeks for the instrument to start to brighten in its tonality range and to broaden in its tonal depth. My mother as a classically trained pianist would also buy a new piano ( very occasionally ) and believe me, even a Yamaha Baby Grand Acoustic Piano takes a few months of playing for it to start to sound and feel close to its best.
I can hear the same "loosening or breaking in " effect happening on my Klpipsch speakers as I heard on the Yamaha Piano.. I hope this is helpful for those who are considering buying these speakers as I have a reference point to use as a point of comparison. So do not listen to those reviewers who bang these speakers with "bad" reviews as almost in each one of those reviews they always seem to mention that " I got the speakers right out of the box, hooked em up, and right away, they sounded muddy and terrible, so I packed em up and sent them back"
I wish they would send them over to me.. If you read through all reviews you WILL notice that everyone who was aware of the needed playing time and waited while they did play these speakers for a while so that they would break in correctly, all write how great the speakers sounded after they were played past that 200 hour point.
