I'm a member of 2 Celtic rock bands and wanted a preamp to be able to control my own sound. I adjust it when we do a sound check before the gig and set the volume at a little less than half. As the evening progresses, things tend to get louder so I have some freedom to crank my volume up when needed. Once I set the brilliance, treble, middle, and bass, I don't move them around as much. For me the brilliance control is great because it gives an extra "bite", adding almost a percussive effect caused by the bowstrokes and, in some cases, left hand finger pressure. That's great for the music I play.I read that this has a long battery life, and I have to agree with that. I gig 2-3 times every weekend, doing 3-4hr shows and have not replaced the battery yet in 2 months. I do make sure to always unplug my cable during breaks and between gigs. That saves the battery.
I'd recommend this model over the model just below this, not only for the middle and brilliance controls, but also for the low battery light indicator.
It's sturdy and not flimsy at all. The levers have a nice "give" to them and won't slide around after you adjust them.
Someone mentioned something about the screws for the belt clip in their review. My experience with it: It went on with the screws provided, but was way too loose. So I cut a small strip of cardboard and put it under the belt clip, put in the screws and it tightened everything up just enough to work for me.
