I bought this subwoofer at a big box store to replace an old infinity sub that had blown. I was just looking for a cheap relacement to get me by for a while until I did a full upgrade. I installed it in my old Scoshe 10" sealed enclosure, and was sadly dissapointed with the sound. I wasn't ready to blame the sub just yet, so I checked out the enclosure specs that came with the sub...The scoshe enclosure had .75 cu ft internal volume (which is bigger than Alpine recommends for this sub, but still within it's exceptable range). I added a couple 2x4's to the inside of the box to get it closer to the .53 cu ft internal volume that Alpine recommends. That is not a typical volume for most 10" enclosures, but it's easy enough if you are making your own box, and it's easy enough to modify a pre-fab box to get it down to proper size.
Once in the correct sized box, it sounded like a whole new sub! And after a couple days of breaking it in I was even more pleased with it. I eventually bought an Atrend custom dual sub enclosure that fits under the back seat of my F150 and I bought another SWE-10s4 for the other side. I was already happy with the sound, but they sounded even better in the Atrend box. These things sound great for their small size and low[er] power ratings. In case anyone is wondering; I am powering them with a Kicker ZX400.1 mono amp pushing 200+ watts RMS into each sub.
Bottom line is... If you need a shallow mount sub (or just need a 10" sub in general) but do not want to spend a fortune, then this sub may be the answer (it was for me). They hit hard, go deep, and can fit in places where most 10" subs are too big. Just make sure your enclosure has the proper internal volume and these subs are sure to please. Remember that these are not Alpine's top of the line subs, and they won't handle a ton of power, but they sound great for what they are.
