Audyssey Audio Dock Speaker System for iPod and iPhone Review

I compared the Logitech S715i (C$149), JBL OnAir ($299), Audyssey SOMA ($299), Bose Sounddock Portable ($299 sale), Monster Dr.Dre beatbox ($439), and Bose Sounddock 10 ($649). I couldn't find the B&W Zeppelin Air ($599) on display. I've read that it has great sound, but it's by far the biggest of these docks and it apparently has some quality issues based on many reviews.

Sound is the main deciding factor for me in a compact/portable dock. I don't care for a CD player, radio or alarm clock given I have the Yamaha MCR040 dock in my bedroom.

After reading the reviews, comparing features and prices, I went to the stores to hear the docks play the same mix of songs in my iPhone4 playlist (hiphop, slow jams, ballads, dance etc). I didn't like the sound of the following: Logitech (sound is not solid throughout the range), JBL (distorts even at low volumes), Monster (too much bass but inaccurate treble especially at low volumes).

The Audyssey wasn't on display. Bose 10 didn't sound much better than the Portable so I ended up buying the Bose Portable. At home I noticed a lot of distortions with songs with heavy bass. I wasn't satisfied so I also purchased the Audyssey online. I compared the Audyssey head to head with the Bose and the Audyssey proved superior. The Bose sounded thin and really struggled/distorted with hiphop/heavy bass songs. The Bose is also not truly portable like a boombox to take camping or to the beach given its volume distribution outside, and high price!

In addition, the Audyssey has other features the Bose does not such as bluetooth. Bluetooth allows you to listen to your music library wirelessly so you can use iPhone's other functions. The volume is lower using bluetooth, but it still sounds awesome with its Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP). To stream music wirelessly with the Bose, you would have to purchase the Apple Airport Express ($99) and audio cable ($10). You're paying for the Bose brandname, but it can't back up the price premium! I bought them for the same price, but I was a lot of more satisfied with the Audyssey so I returned the Bose.

NB: Audyssey is a company known for sound calibration on many high-end AV receivers, IMAX theatres and car audio.
This review is based on my sound preference when I compared the different docks; I don't care to pretend to be a techie.

Audyssey Pros:
- solid sound at different volumes and with different types of songs (4 amplifiers, 200 watts)
- bluetooth for wireless music streaming
- can be used as a computer speaker, speakerphone
- unique/solid design

Audyssey Cons:
- back of the unit gets a little hot which apparently is normal due to the power source
- heavy at over 12 lbs.
- power cord isn't long.
