I had just ordered the Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 Home Theater package. My previous setup was a little mis-matched 5.1 with the speakers mounted to the wall all the way around. However, before purchasing my upgrade, I did some research into speaker placement because I did not like how the sound was muddied and muffled a bit, coming from the 5.1 setup. It turns out speaker placement and direction are critical for a proper home theater soundstage.
Our living room is wide open with a ceiling that goes from 10ft to 15ft. A general rule is to not have your surround speakers more than 3ft difference in distance between them and the central listening point. In other words, if your left surround is 10 ft from the point, the right surround should be between 7 and 13 ft.
Anyway, these stands allowed me to position my speakers at the optimum location.
They shipped fast and had a great price. They are all metal and quite sturdy. The only thing they don't tell you is that in order to run your speaker wire through the pole, you have to pop off the plastic insert that covers it. I did have to do some adjusting, as the speaker plate and holes were a bit too wide for my speakers. I drilled new holes about 3/4" farther in and used small wood screws to fasten to my speakers. It worked perfectly. The stand holds them well and feels secure (they will definitely be put to the test with my three year old!).
Adjusting the height is easy. The telescoping pole is solid and it doesn't feel unstable when fully extended. The tightening wheel is solid and smooth, it doesn't have that "digging into the metal" feel like some of those tightening screws have. It doesn't leave any scratch marks on the black matte finish.
I also like the all metal feel to the stands, as I have grown increasingly weary of plastic/composite material for home theater accessories.
All in all, I feel these stands are an excellent choice for budget-minded enthusiasts.
