Product Description

Cool beauty delivering 28 watts per channel of pure listening pleasure. The very latest edition to the range for 2012, the Mi-Tube is compact and sexy, but still packs a solid punch. Producing 28w per channel this is no lightweight when it comes to power. Utilising a radical new hybrid valve design, the basis of which was first suggested in a theoretical paper 50 years ago, it just sings with quality... And looks stunning. Thanks to its Bluetooth connectivity audio can also be streamed wireless! This opens the Mi-Tube to more than just iPhone's and iPod's, to any Bluetooth Enabled device. This is a hybrid valve amplifier for the connoisseur. Cool Beauty.

Fatman - Mi-Tube - Valve Amplifier with Bluetooth in Black Review

User profile: I'm an audio prosumer -not a hardcore audiophile who obsesses over the slightest sound variation but definitely someone who appreciates a sound beyond what your made-for-the-masses hi-fi. I've got a home theatre setup that handles most of my listening, movies, gaming etc and wanted something for my office, which is where the Fatman comes in.

I've owned quite a few "desktop" sytems, from a Bose Sound Dock (great in its own respect) to a Jambox Bluetooth speaker (also great in its own respect) but wanted something a step up from those that wouldn't break the bank.

Trouble is, I couldn't find any reviews on the Mi-Tube, at least not from anyone who had similar listening habits to my self. So here is that review, in case anyone out there is...well...in the same boat as I was :)

The Mi-Tube doesn't come with speakers so ultimately, this review is subjective based on what you pair it with.

In my case, I looked high and low to find suitable matches for it. The amp is not a beast by any means (28w/channel x 2) so speaker sensitivity was an important factor in chosing a match. My short list came down to some of the smaller Monitor Audio bookshelf speakers, the Definitive Technologies studio monitors and the Axiom M2v3's.

If you've read this far, then you understand that you can spend as much as you want on good speakers...several times more than you would spend on the Mi-Tube so with the idea of building a sub $1K system, I went with the Axiom M2's.

Turns out I made a good decision on both the Mi-Tube and speakers. This combination puts out a very transparent, warm and forward sound that is all-day-long enjoyable. Even though the Mi-Tube isn't a "true" vacuum tube amplifier (the tubes are only used at the pre-amp stage...there is another solid state amplifier that beefs up the output afterward), the sound is night and day different than what you would get without them...or for that matter, from a comparable, non-tube amp of this price.

The kicker on the Fatman line is obviously the design. As someone who works in design, I can truly appreciate the thought that went into this little gem and it's a nice addition to anyone's decor.

The bluetooth streaming is nice. With 320kbps MP3's, it sounds a little reverberated or digitized at higher volume, but still very enjoyable. With the same source material or better (CD/WAV, FLAC, etc), everything sounds crystal clear with voices and strings in particular revealing detail you would not have gotten from a $350 run-of-the-mill iPod dock.

Truth be told, the whole system with a set of decent speakers will set you back north of $700, but if you are like me and are after a different sound, appreciate design and want to try something new, then this amp (or any of the newer Fatman products most likely) is worth a listen.
